Porthole Gate and Fence Stencil, A How to Paint Guide
Gate measures 49 1/2" h x 46" w (125.73cm x 114.30cm)
Please read and follow all instructions carefully. All measurements should be exact and all lines should be straight and level.
Measure twice - paint once
! Double check all of your measurements. A small error can have a large effect on the final result.
The gate and fence may be painted as part of the Garden Gate by the Shore Mural or they may be painted on a plain wall without the mural background. As another choice, the gate may be omitted totally; only the fence and posts are painted. With this option, you should read all stenciling instructions which make reference to the gate but do not use them. If you will be painting a background as shown in the mural picture, it would be done first. The gate and fence would be painted next followed by the other mural stencil designs.
Before you begin, read all directions included in this stencil package. Basic information is included in the enclosed brochures. Practice assembly of the gate and fence on a large piece of paper (60" x 60", 152.40cm x 152.40cm). There is no paint involved in this step; the design is outlined with a pencil. Practice until you understand the order of the stencil overlays and color placement. Once this step is mastered, practice painting a small portion on paper so that you get a feel for the proper amount of paint to use on your roller and stencil brush.
- All of the white sections of this design are painted first using a narrow roller. When areas of stenciling overlap, it is necessary to allow the paint to dry to the touch before proceeding to avoid smudges. Your paint roller or brush may be stored in a sealable plastic bag while you wait. The shadows are painted with gray using a stencil brush.
: The pickets may be painted using the stencils or by following the Alternate Taping Method instructions. Taping is done with “Easy Mask” tape; a brown, low tack, 2” wide, paper tape which is available in paint and hardware stores.
- Fig. 1 identifies the stencil sheets and the stencil pieces for this design. The lettering does not indicate the order in which the stencils are used; it is for identification purposes only. A picture of small scissors on the illustrations (sheets A, B, & D), indicates where a piece is to be carefully removed. This can be done by using scissors or a craft knife. Keep the cutouts for later use.
