A How to Guide for Pergola Stencil Painting

Please read all directions in each stencil package before beginning.

The following instructions are for the Pergola painted as part of the Garden Delight Mural. The listed dimensions may be changed to accommodate your own wall space. We recommend that you trace the design on a large piece of paper so that you become comfortable with the assembly process. You should also try painting a small portion on paper to get the feel for how much paint to put on your roller so that it does not seep under the edges of the stencil.

Once you decide where you are going to put the design, you need to make some measurements and then you can start painting.

Step 1

Measure 7 ½ inches down from the ceiling or molding. Mark this measurement a few times on the wall so you can draw a straight horizontal line.

Step 2

Measure 32" from left to right, put a mark at 0" and again at 32". Do this a couple of times down the wall.

Step 3

Connect the dots you marked on the wall in a straight vertical line. (From ceiling to floor) Do this on both the left side and the right side.

Step 4

Using Sheet 1 stencil piece #10 hold it so you can read the SE D413. Line the right side of the #10 rectangle so it lines up with the outside of the left line, and the top of the piece is aligned with the horizontal line you drew from the ceiling. Tape to wall and lightly mark the top two triangle registration marks (TRMS). Take off wall and do the same thing on the right hand side. Remember to go to the out side of the line you drew.

From here on out we will be using the stencils in order from #1 - #11.

Step 5

Next Take stencil sheet 1 which has #1 start on the left hand side line the two BOTTOM TRMS up with the two you have already marked on the wall. Tape this piece to the wall. Then lightly mark all the other TRMS for piece #1. (These will be needed for other parts)

Step 6

After you paint #1 take it off the wall and move it to the right line up the far left ARMS on the stencil with the far right ARMS you put on the wall. Tape the piece to the wall. Paint and repeat this process all the way to the other line. When you reach the other side mark all the ARMS from piece #1 again. (These will be needed to create the other side post.)

Step 7

Now take piece #2 Line the registration marks up on the left side and paint, then do the same on the right side.

Step 8

Next take piece #3 line this piece up to the right of piece #2 and paint. Once again do the same thing on the right side.

Step 9

Piece #4 line up underneath piece #2, paint that out and repeat on the right hand side.

Step 10

Piece #5 lines up under the long white beam of piece #1 you painted first. Paint this out on both sides.

Step 11

Piece #6 is the shadow for piece #5 and it lines up under piece #5. Paint out on both sides.

Step 12

Piece #7 WITH THIS ONE YOU SHOULD START ON THE RIGHT!! This piece is the end shadow, so line it up on the end of the beam, paint out and clean off or let the stencil dry. Then take the stencil to the left side FLIP the stencil over and line it up on the left-hand side to create the shadow on that side.

Step 13

AGAIN You WANT TO START ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE, take piece #8 and line it up under the beam and next to the bottom of piece #7. Paint and either wipe off or let the stencil dry. Now go to the left-hand side and FLIP the stencil over line it up and paint it out.

Step 14

Piece #9 lines up under the beam of piece #1. (You will need to tape off the tops of the post and shadows that you have already painted.) Start on the left and paint it out all the way across to the other side.

Step 15

Piece #10 is your posts. Line up under the tops that you have already painted. Paint piece #10 and continue painting it down the wall to the floor. Do the same thing on the right side.

Step 16

Piece #11 is the shadow for the post, line this piece up to the right of the post paint and move down the wall to the floor. Repeat this process on the right hand side as well.
