Using AI to Help Design Your Custom Stencil

Using AI to Help Design Your Custom Stencil

AI tools like ChatGPT can be a great way to turn an idea into a visual concept for a custom stencil. They can help you explore different layouts, images, wording, colors and sizes before you send your project to us.

You don't need to know how to design or manufacture a stencil to submit a request to us. Use AI to help develop and visualize what you want. Then send your concept to Stencil Ease and our designers will determine how to turn it into a stencil that works.

1. Start With the Basics

Before asking AI to create a design, give it some basic information about your project:

  • Where will the stencil be used? Wall, floor, parking lot, playground, grass, equipment, sign or another surface?
  • How large should the finished design be? Give the approximate width and height of the painted image.
  • What should it contain? Text, an image or logo, or a combination?
  • What should the text say? Include the exact wording, spelling and capitalization.
  • How many colors? One color is simplest, but we regularly make multicolor stencil sets. Depending on your needs, each color can be on a separate overlay stencil or you can manually paint each color with a one overlay stencil.
  • What should it look like? Bold, simple, industrial, traditional, playful, elegant, realistic or another style?

2. Let AI Help You Explore the Design

This is where AI can be especially useful. Ask it to help you:

  • Try different arrangements of text and images
  • Explore different graphic styles
  • Simplify a complicated image
  • Remove unnecessary details
  • Experiment with colors
  • Compare different sizes and proportions
  • Create a visual concept of the finished design

For most stencil designs, clear shapes, limited colors and strong visual elements work best.

Don't worry about how the stencil itself will be manufactured. Concentrate on getting the concept right. Stencil Ease will take care of the stencil engineering.

3. Think About Letter Size and Viewing Distance

If your design contains words or numbers, don't think only about how much space is available. Consider how far away the finished lettering needs to be comfortably read.

The chart below provides general guidance for capital letter height:

Capital Letter Height Maximum Readable Distance Comfortable Reading Distance
1 inch ~10 ft ~5–7 ft
1.5 inches ~15 ft ~8–10 ft
2 inches ~20 ft ~10–14 ft
3 inches ~30 ft ~15–20 ft
4 inches ~40 ft ~20–28 ft
5 inches ~50 ft ~25–35 ft
6 inches ~60 ft ~30–40 ft
8 inches ~80 ft ~40–55 ft
10 inches ~100 ft ~50–70 ft
12 inches ~120 ft ~60–80 ft
18 inches ~180 ft ~90–125 ft
24 inches ~240 ft ~120–165 ft

These are general guidelines. Font style, spacing, contrast, lighting and viewing conditions can affect readability.

Need Very Small Lettering?

For most projects, 1/2 inch is our normal minimum letter height. With simple fonts and uppercase lettering, we can sometimes produce letters as small as 1/4 inch. For specialized military and industrial marking applications, we can produce certain modified fonts as small as 1/8 inch.

If you need very small lettering, simply tell us what you need and let our designers determine the best solution.

4. If You Already Have Artwork, Use It

If you have an existing company logo, drawing, photograph or other artwork, include it when developing your concept and send the original artwork to Stencil Ease.

Vector artwork such as AI, EPS or SVG files is particularly helpful when available, but you do not need a vector file to ask us to make a stencil.

An AI-generated image, JPG, PNG, photograph or even a sketch can be a great way to show us what you want.

5. Use This Prompt With ChatGPT or Another AI Assistant

Copy the prompt below and paste it into your preferred AI tool:

AI Custom Stencil Design Prompt

I want to create a custom stencil that will be manufactured by Stencil Ease.

Help me develop the concept for the stencil. Start by asking me a few simple questions, one at a time, about where the stencil will be used, the approximate finished size, whether it contains text, an image/logo or both, the exact wording of any text, the number of colors and the overall visual style I want.

Help me create a design that is clear, visually strong and reasonably simple. When appropriate, suggest ways to simplify the design, reduce unnecessary detail or reduce the number of colors while keeping the important visual features.

If the design contains text, ask me approximately how far away it needs to be comfortably readable and help me consider an appropriate letter size.

If I have an existing logo, image, sketch or other artwork, ask me to provide it rather than recreating it from memory.

Do not try to engineer the final stencil or make final manufacturing decisions. Stencil Ease will handle those decisions.

Once we have developed a concept I like, create a short Custom Stencil Design Brief that I can send to Stencil Ease. Include the finished size, exact text, description of the image or design, colors, intended use and anything I have said is particularly important to preserve.

6. Send Your Idea to Stencil Ease

Once you have a concept you like, you don't need to keep working with AI until you have a "finished stencil file."

Send us:

  • Your AI-generated concept or other artwork
  • The desired finished painted size
  • The exact wording of any text
  • The number of colors
  • Any original logo, photograph or artwork
  • Where and how the stencil will be used
  • Anything in the design that is especially important to preserve

That's enough to get the process started.

You develop the idea. Stencil Ease will help turn it into a stencil.
