National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 5000 and IBC Section 703.5 require permanent, legible markings on every fire-rated wall in commercial and multifamily construction. StencilEase fire barrier stencils are worded to meet code, laser-cut from durable Mylar, and available in 3-inch (NFPA minimum) and 4-inch letter heights for jurisdictions that require larger lettering.

Smoke Barrier, Fire Barrier, or Fire Wall — with 1-hour through 4-hour rating variants — we have the exact stencil your project calls for. One stencil handles an entire job site, costs pennies per marking, and paints right over at finish with no removal or wall prep required.

Need custom wording? Our custom stencil service cuts to your exact specs — non-standard phrasing, additional rating language, or unusual letter sizes.

We ship fast, and our team is ready if you're on a tight deadline.

Code-Compliant Markings for Fire-Rated Construction Walls

Ensure compliance with NFPA 5000 and International Building Code (IBC) safety standards with our easy-to-use fire-rated wall stencils. Built for contractors, inspectors, and facility managers, our fire barrier stencils make it simple to apply clear, durable identification markings on walls, partitions, and smoke barriers throughout any commercial or industrial building. Our standard wording is written to national code language, and we can tailor it to your local AHJ's requirements when needed.

Fire-Rated Wall Signs and The NFPA

Fire-rated walls are designed to slow the spread of fire and smoke between compartments, or rooms in a building, giving occupants more time to evacuate and first responders more time to act. But those walls can only do their job if they're properly identified. NFPA 5000 requires permanent markings with lettering at least 3 inches in height in a contrasting color, and IBC (International Building Code) Section 703.5 requires markings within 15 feet of each wall end and at intervals not exceeding 30 feet along the wall, above ceiling lines, in concealed spaces, and anywhere trades might need to penetrate the wall.

That's where our firewall stencils shine. A painted marking is permanent, low-cost, and instantly recognizable; exactly what inspectors and contractors need to see.

Why Fire-Rated Wall Stencils Beat Sticky Labels

Preprinted adhesive labels might seem like a quick fix, but on an active construction site, they fall short fast. Here's why contractors who've tried both stick with stencils:

  • Cost per marking
StencilEase Stencil: Pennies; one stencil, hundreds of uses
Adhesive Label: Single-use, costs add up fast
  • Durability
StencilEase Stencil: Laser-cut Mylar, cleans and stores for reuse
Adhesive Label: Tears, curls, and falls off in dusty or humid conditions
  • Permanence
StencilEase Stencil: Paint soaks into the surface and can't be peeled off
Adhesive Label: Can be peeled, damaged, or fall off before inspection
  • Finish-ready
StencilEase Stencil: Paint right over it when the wall is done; zero prep, zero removal
Adhesive Label: Must be removed before finishing; adhesive residue may require wall prep
  • Portability
StencilEase Stencil: Lightweight, fits in a tool bag
Adhesive Label: Bulky rolls or sheets, single-use

One stencil covers an entire project, and the next one. When you're done, just wipe it clean and store it for the next job.

What You'll Find in Our Firewall Stencils Collection

Our fire-rated wall signs cover the most common code-required ratings and wording, including:

  • One-hour fire barrier and smoke barrier markings for standard-rated walls
  • Two-hour fire barrier and smoke barrier markings for higher-protection assemblies
  • Three-hour fire barrier and smoke barrier markings for the most demanding applications
  • Combined smoke and fire barrier stencils for dual-purpose identification
  • "Fire and Smoke Barrier: Protect All Openings" stencils to remind trades that all penetrations must be properly firestopped
  • Heavy-duty self-supporting FIRE WALL stencils with 3-inch letters for contractors who stencil frequently and need something that holds up on the job site
  • Fire Wall multi-piece kits that give you everything needed to mark multiple ratings from a single package
  • Custom fire barrier stencils for when your facility or jurisdiction requires specific wording, sizing, or language

Wall Type Quick Reference

  • Smoke Barrier
Typical Use: Limits smoke migration between zones
Common Hour Ratings: Unrated to 1-hour
  • Fire Barrier
Typical Use: Separates areas by fire resistance rating
    Common Hour Ratings: 1-hour, 2-hour, 3-hour
  • Fire Wall
Typical Use: Full structural separation between buildings or occupancies
    Common Hour Ratings: 2-hour, 3-hour, 4-hour

Not sure which wall type your project requires? Your construction drawings and local AHJ will specify, and our team is happy to help you pick the right firewall stencil.

How to Apply Fire Barrier Wall Markings

Marking a fire-rated wall to code takes less than a minute per location:

  1. Position the stencil at each required marking location, typically every 30 feet along the wall run and within 15 feet of each end per IBC 703.5.
  2. Secure it to the wall. You can use tape, but a light coat of StencilEase Repositionable Adhesive Spray on the back of the stencil is faster. It turns the stencil tacky so it holds flat against the wall on its own; no tape, no helper, no bleeding edges.
  3. Apply the paint. Spray aerosol paint works well, but for the cleanest result on a job site, use an ink roller. It's faster, neater, and gives you a sharp edge every time.
  4. Pull and move. Peel the stencil off cleanly, reposition, and repeat. The adhesive won't leave residue on the wall, and the stencil is ready to use again immediately.
  5. Done at project close. When it's time to finish the wall, just paint over the marking. No peeling, no scraping, no wall prep required.

Why Contractors and Facility Managers Choose StencilEase

  • Code-grounded from the start. Our standard stencil wording aligns with NFPA 5000 and IBC Section 703.5 requirements. Available in 3-inch letter height (the NFPA-recommended minimum) and 4-inch letter height for jurisdictions or inspectors that require larger lettering.
  • Every wall type is covered. Smoke Barrier, Fire Barrier, and Fire Wall, with hour-rating variants from 1-hour through 4-hour, so your marking matches exactly what the engineer of record specified.
  • Built for the job site. Laser-cut from industrial Mylar at our Old Saybrook, CT facility. Crisp letters, clean edges, and stencils that won't curl, tear, or distort after a few uses (or a few hundred). Whether you're a general contractor marking hundreds of linear feet of rated partitions or a facility manager touching up identification during a renovation, they deliver the same clean result every time.
  • Customize when the code isn't standard. Fire districts and local AHJs don't always use the same verbiage. Our custom stencil service handles non-standard phrasing, additional rating language, or unusual letter sizes. Submit your exact specs, and we'll cut it to order, fast.

Where Fire-Rated Wall Signs Are Used

Fire-rated wall markings are required or strongly recommended in a wide range of buildings, including:

  • Hospitals, medical offices, and assisted living facilities
  • Schools, universities, and dormitories
  • Hotels, apartment buildings, and multi-family housing
  • Warehouses, manufacturing plants, and distribution centers
  • Office towers, government buildings, and data centers

Anywhere codes call out fire and smoke barrier identification, a painted stencil marking is one of the most practical and inspector-friendly ways to get it done.
