  • What is the best stencil Material?

Mylar is the most commonly used stencil material and the best material for most uses. It is tough flexible, cleanable, does not stretch, and can be used for many uses. We carry many grades 4 5, 6 7, 10 and 14 mil. A mil is one-thousandth of an inch. 4 and 5 mil is best for smaller projects and just a few uses Also particularly good for rounded surfaces. 10 mil is our most commonly used material with a good blend of durability and flexibility.

The Largest Selection of Blank Stencil Sheets in the USA

No matter your application, we have a material that fits. Our customers range from hobbyists and small business owners to Fortune 500 companies, airports, and branches of the U.S. military, and they all come back because the quality holds up.

Why Mylar Is the Go-To Stencil Material

There's a reason mylar stencil material is the industry standard. It checks every box:

  • Durable and reusable: Stands up to repeated use, solvents, and cleaning without warping or tearing.
  • Easy to cut: Works beautifully with Cricut and Silhouette machines, gyro-cutters, X-Acto knives, and other hand-cutting tools.
  • Transparent for easy alignment: You can see right through it, which makes tracing, positioning, and registering designs a breeze.
  • Affordable: Professional results without a professional price tag. A single sheet can be reused many times over.
  • Versatile: Great for wall art, signage, airbrushing, cake decorating, fabric painting, glass etching, and much more.

Our plastic stencil sheets come in a range of thicknesses measured in mils (one mil = one-thousandth of an inch). Thinner options like 4-mil and 5-mil are ideal for small, detailed work and curved surfaces. Our 10-mil mylar stencil sheets are the most popular all-around choice, offering a solid balance of durability and flexibility. And for heavy industrial use, we carry 14-mil mylar and beyond.

More Than Just Mylar

While mylar covers most needs, some jobs call for something different. We also stock:

  • Oil board stencil sheets: A traditional, eco-friendly option available in 7-pt and 15-pt weights. Great for reusable stencils with a classic feel.
  • Adhesive-backed mylar: Sticks in place on curved or vertical surfaces. Perfect for automotive work, glass etching, and any application where shifting could ruin the result.
  • Contractor-grade LLDPE, LDPE, and HDPE sheets: Tough, industrial-grade materials designed for parking lots, warehouses, and road marking.

Professional Results Made Simple

One of the best things about working with quality stencil material is how easy it is to get clean, sharp, professional-looking results. Whether you're stenciling a logo on a fleet of trucks, adding a decorative border to a living room wall, or marking safety zones on a factory floor, the right material makes all the difference. Crisp edges, consistent coverage, and a finished look that holds up: that's what good plastic stencil sheets deliver.

Stencils are a fast easy and inexpensive way to comply with Fire barrier marking requirements

Fire-rated wall identification isn't optional — it's a legal requirement on virtually every commercial and multifamily construction project in the United States. NFPA 5000 requires "permanent markings with lettering at least 3 inches in height in a contrasting color to identify the wall type." The International Building Code reinforces this: markings must be placed within 15 feet of each wall end and repeated at intervals not exceeding 30 feet measured horizontally along the wall or partition.

StencilEase fire barrier stencils are built for exactly this job. Whether you're marking a Smoke Barrier, Fire Barrier, or Fire Wall — and whether your jurisdiction calls for 1-hour, 2-hour, or 3-hour rated designations — our stencils give your crew a fast, permanent, inspection-ready result every time.

Why Stencils Beat Sticky Labels on the Job Site?

Preprinted adhesive labels might seem like a quick fix, but on an active construction site they fall short fast. Here's why contractors who've tried both stick with stencils:

Cost per marking
StencilEase Stencil: Pennies — one stencil, hundreds of uses.
Adhesive Label: Single use, cost adds up fast.

Durability
StencilEase Stencil: Laser-cut Mylar, cleans and stores for reuse.
Adhesive Label: Tears, curls, and falls off in dusty or humid conditions.

Permanence
StencilEase Stencil: Paint soaks into the surface — can't be peeled off.
Adhesive Label: Can be peeled, damaged, or fall off before inspection.

Finish-ready
StencilEase Stencil: Paint right over it when the wall is done — zero prep, zero removal.
Adhesive Label: Must be removed before finishing; adhesive residue may require wall prep.

Portability
StencilEase Stencil: Lightweight, fits in a tool bag.
Adhesive Label: Bulky rolls or sheets, single use.

One stencil covers an entire project — and the next one. When you're done, just wipe it clean and store it for the next job.

How to Apply Fire Barrier Wall Markings?

Marking a fire-rated wall to code takes less than a minute per location. Here's the workflow:

Step 1 — Position the stencil
Place the stencil at each required marking location — typically every 30 feet along the wall run and within 15 feet of each end per IBC 703.5.

Step 2 — Secure it to the wall
You can use tape, but the faster method is a light coat of StencilEase Repositionable Adhesive Spray on the back of the stencil. It turns the stencil tacky so it adheres flat against the wall on its own — no tape, no helper needed, no bleeding edges.

Step 3 — Apply the paint
Spray aerosol paint works well, but for the cleanest result and most control on a job site, use an ink roller. It's faster, neater, and gives you a sharp edge every time.

Step 4 — Pull and move
Peel the stencil off cleanly, move it to the next location, and repeat. The repositionable adhesive won't leave residue on the wall and the stencil is ready to use again immediately.

Step 5 — Done at project close
When it's time to finish the wall, simply paint over the marking. No peeling, no scraping, no wall prep required.

Why Contractors and Facility Managers Choose StencilEase?

Code-grounded from the start. Our standard stencil wording aligns with NFPA 5000 and IBC Section 703.5 requirements. Available in 3-inch letter height (the NFPA-recommended minimum) and 4-inch for jurisdictions or inspectors that require larger lettering.

Every wall type covered. Smoke Barrier, Fire Barrier, and Fire Wall — with hour-rating variants so your marking matches exactly what the engineer of record specified.

Custom when the code isn't standard. Fire districts and local AHJs don't always use the same verbiage. Our custom stencil service handles non-standard phrasing, additional rating language, or unusual letter sizes — submit your exact specs and we'll cut it to order.

Wall Type Quick Reference

Smoke Barrier — Limits smoke migration between zones. Common ratings: unrated to 1-hour.

Fire Barrier — Separates areas by fire resistance rating. Common ratings: 1-hour, 2-hour, 3-hour.

Fire Wall — Full structural separation between buildings or occupancies. Common ratings: 2-hour, 3-hour, 4-hour.

Not sure which wall type your project requires? Your construction drawings and local AHJ will specify — our team is happy to help.

Every hour of delay on a wall marking inspection is an hour of lost schedule. StencilEase ships fast, and our team is standing by if you need a custom stencil on a tight deadline. Browse the collection below or contact us at 1-800-334-1776 or service@stencilease.com.
